Michael Putland - The Music I Saw

Celebrating Michael Putland’s new book 'The Music I Saw', Lucy Bell Gallery is delighted to host an exhibition of large scale and vintage prints from Michael’s extensive body of work.

We have the very sad news yesterday that Michael Putland has died  The exhibition will continue as normal celebrating this legendary photographer's work so please come by. The gallery is open Tuesday - Friday 11am-4pm and Saturday 11am-5pm.

Michael Putland has photographed many of the great musicians of our times. In 1973 he was hired to become tour photographer for The Rolling Stones European Tour, which lead to a life-long relationship with The Stones, and resulted in some of their most enduring portraits, many of which are candid behind the scenes shots

Putland is known as one of the UK’s finest music photographers whose career spans 50years. His work includes shoots with John Lennon, Bob Marley, David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Siouxsie Sioux, Eric Clapton, Prince, Led Zeppelin, Nina Simone, Tom Waits, Pete Townshend, Neil Young, The Cure, Elton John, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen, Muddy Waters, and The Who to name a few!

It’s been said that Michael has photographed everyone from “Abba to Zappa” and 'The Music I Saw' is a photographic journey of Michael Putland’s 50 year career capturing the soul and essence on and off stage of rock, pop and soul, world and Jazz musicians.

Signed copies of this 354 page luxury hard back book are available at the gallery for £45. Published by Italian design house and publisher Lullabit, the book has both Italian and English text, and is a stunning present for every music or photography loving household for Christmas.

Putland took his first pictures at the age of nine and left school at sixteen to work as an assistant to various photographers including Time-Life photographer, Walter Curtain and the legendary motor racing photographer, Louis Klemantaski. In 1969 he set up his own studio and within a few years he was shooting regularly for British music magazines. From strolling into the Marquee Club to photograph The Who in 1965, Putland went on to tour with acts as diverse as the Rolling Stones, George Michael, Eric Clapton, The Cure, The Osmonds, and  was very much in demand shooting constantly for all the top record labels and many of the great artists of the time. He was the photographer who captured David Bowie painting hisceiling at Hadden Hall, and Bob Marley Mick Jagger and Peter Tosh smiling backstage after a Stones gig, as well as John Lennon and Yoko Ono relaxed on the floor of the White Room, that was made famous in the Imagine Video, images that have encapsulated an era for so many people.

I worked 7 days a week be it in the studio, on tour, concert hall or in the darkroom” says Michael Putland, who has over 400,000 images in his collection, documenting the music industry fromthe 60’s through to the present day. Putland describes his extraordinary photographic life combining his love of music and photography,

“Its been a fantastic ride...” and this book is a great way to hitch a lift!
